Abstract

Communicating by using a foreign language can be a challenging experience for some people who learn to speak a language fluently. Nowadays, people communicate in many languages which are different from their native language. In Indonesia, English is considered as a foreign language. There are massive interests in learning English among the students. There are several factors which influence the language learning process. This research is intended to analyse foreign language anxiety and shyness among students at the Faculty of Language and Arts Soegijapranata Catholic University. Using the quantitative method, this research attempts to reveal the correlation between foreign language anxiety level and shyness level of the students. The writer distributed the questionnaire to 150 students at Faculty of Language and Arts and used inferential statistics, Pearson Correlation, to analyze the data by using IBM SPSS Statistic 20. The results showed that the foreign language anxiety level and shyness level of the students was moderate. The results indicated that the correlation between foreign language anxiety and shyness was positive yet weak. This means that the higher the level of shyness is, the more anxious the students are.
