Abstract

Modern film has always been accompanied by music, either it is intentionally composed or merely chosen from existing music to accompany the motion pictures. This study focuses on the functions of film music in a movie about a boy who lives alone behind the wall of a train station in Paris. The boy, Hugo, then tries to restore the happiness of an old man who is happened to be Georges Melies, one of the first film-makers. The writer identifies the music used in the film of Hugo to find out the functions of film music in Hugo. Film music theories from Aaron Copland and Annabel J. Cohen are used to analyze her research data. The research reveals that film music in Hugo has three major functions, namely, creating moods, producing a more convincing atmosphere of time and place and helping to express the inner feeling of the character on screen.
