Abstract

This research focuses on parental beliefs and involvement in children's English education from an early age. This research aims to find out what parents believe in the English education given to their children from an early age, and to what extent these beliefs reflect parents’ involvement in providing English exposure for their children to improve their children's English skills. The Sequential Explanatory or Mixed Methodology approach was used as the research methodology in this research. To obtain quantitative data, the author distributed 30 online questionnaires to English-based school parents. Quantitative data is used to collect parental beliefs and involvement in their children's English education from an early age. To support quantitative data, the author selected five parents who currently or have ever sent their children to English-based schools to be interviewed for qualitative data. Qualitative data aims to obtain in-depth information about respondents’ beliefs in children’s early childhood English education and also to what extent their beliefs can reflect their English involvement for their children as well as additional experiences in their views on the importance of English education from an early age. From the first research question, the results of the quantitative data show that the most average value from the parental belief compared to the 7 statements is parental belief in the role of English as a valuable asset in opening opportunities for a better future. The qualitative findings also support the same viewpoints from parents that all of the interviewees believe that English skills will be an opportunity for them to achieve successful careers and obtain higher education in the future. From the second research question, the quantitative data shows that 52% of the respondents are active in providing English exposure that reflects their beliefs. The interviewees explain that the active exposure of parents influences the results of children's absorption in learning English. At the end of the discussions, the forms of involvement most often chosen by parents are watching English TV programs, entering children into bilingual schools, and listening to English songs.
