Abstract

The Shawshank Redemption is a movie about a banker, Andy Dufresne, who was sentenced to live in prison because of murdering his wife and her lover. During his prison life, Andy experienced several incidents. He got abused by the other prisoners who did not like him. But, Andy always learned and looked for any chance even though sometimes life is not fair to him. The writer uses a theory about the hero’s journey by Carol S. Pearson which is developed from Carl Jung’s theory. The writer also adds a theory from Joseph Campbell to strengthen Pearson’s theory. Using this theory, the writer analyzes Andy’s journey in the Shawshank Prison by looking at the narrative text, behavior, and physical gesture. In this study, the writer finds that Andy has experienced five out of six stages of hero’s journey (Innocent to Orphan, Wanderer, Warrior, Magician, and Return) which happens twice and as a result he has experienced ten stages from two cycles. In this movie, Andy does not experience the Martyr stage in the first and second cycle. This study proves Pearson’s theory that the stages of hero’s journey are cycling because Andy’s hero journey happens twice.
