Abstract

Bridge to Terabithia is a film taken from a book with the same title, and it has been written by Katherine Paterson in October 21, 1977. This film was directed by Gabur Scupo in 2007. In this film, the main character, Jesse Aarons, develops his identity in his teenage life. The purpose of this study is to analyze the identity stages of Jess based on Marcia’s theory. The writer uses qualitative methods in this study. This study is to classify the identity stages of Jess based on James E. Marcia’s theory. Marcia’s four identity statuses are identity diffusion, identity foreclosure, identity moratorium, and identity achievement. The result of the study shows that Jess experiences all four stages of identity. In the identity diffusion stage, Jess has not found his truly identity. He is still confused and does not know what to do in his life. In the identity foreclosure stage, Jess cannot disobey his parents’ orders. As a result, he becomes someone who obeys each command given by his parents especially his father. Then, in identity moratorium stage, Jess begins to open up himself to accept the existence of others. Jess begins to accept the role of other people as a result of a friend named Leslie. Based on Marcia’s theory, identity moratorium is followed by identity achievement, but because Leslie’s death leads to Jess’ turn back to identity diffusion stage. However, Jess can finally rise and reach the identity achievement stage. He has been able to accept the reality and change himself to become a better person
