Abstract

The writer investigates swear words uttered in Mac & Devin Go To High School movie using sociolinguistics approach. The movie that has 1 hour and 15 minutes’ duration starred by Snoop Dogg (Mac Johnson) and Wiz Khalifa (Devin Overstreet) as students of St. Yale School. There are lot of swear words that uttered on each scene in this movie. This research aims to analyze the swear words that are used by characters in the movie, especially to identify the types based on Battistella (2005) and their function based on Andersson and Trudgill (1990) theories. This research use content analysis as a method because the resources come from the film and the script from the film itself. The writer uses the dialog that contain swear words in the form of a table to make this research easier. Some other relevant books used as references to answer problem formulation. Based on this research, the writer found three types of swearwords: epithets, profanity, and vulgarity/obscenity in the movie. Each of swear words uttered by characters on the movie has their function: expletive, abusive, humorous, and auxiliary. The type of swear words are dominated by vulgarity/obscenity and the characters on the movie more often swearing as auxiliary function. There also swear words that are rarely used in general. Meanwhile, the way Mac speaking in the movie became a special concern because He often uttered swear words on his utterances.
