Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the factors influencing how descriptive and prescriptive stereotypes towards women’s sexuality are formed and upheld through the framework of the symbolic interaction theory. A phenomenological approach is conducted upon 4 individuals (2 females and 2 males), by way of a semi-structured interview, to explore their experiences that factor in the development and perpetuation of descriptive and prescriptive stereotypes towards women’s sexuality. Through analyzation methods of transcription, content analysis, and thematic coding, it is discovered that Javanese women and men may share certain stereotypes, the development and perpetuation of said stereotypes differ according to influencing factor such as cultural background, familial influence, and social influence.
