Abstract

This research focusses on the marriage rituals in Batak Toba tradition, especially the one called Ulaon Unjuk. It aims to explain how the process of Ulaon Unjuk is performed in Semarang. In order to collect data, the writer did observations, documented some events, interviewed three informants they are Amangboru Lumbangaol, Tulang Sagala, and Tulang Sitanggang, the writer also read relevant written materials. Ulaon Unjuk ritual is preceded by Manomu-nomu (a ritual to welcome the bride’s family members), then followed by Pasahat Jambar (handing over pig meat and goldfish), Panandeyon (the process when both sides introduce their family members), Mangulosi (the bride’s side presenting ulos cloth to the groom’s side), and concluded with Paulak Une (the groom’s side expressing gratitude to the bride’s). Ulaon Unjuk ritual covers 3 important elements. The first is the ritual object elements in the forms of rice, Deke, pig meat, Ulos, and Gondang). The second is people elements, namely, the bride and the groom and their family members, invited guests (including the costumes they wear in the ritual such as Sortali, Borgut, and Tali-tali), and musicians. The third is the language element, that is, the use of Bataknese language having poetic quality. Regarding to the reasons for keeping the tradition in Semarang, the informants point out that the Ulaon Unjuk ritual is preserved in order to pay respect for their ancestral tradition, ensure culture transmission, maintain the spirit of brotherhood among Bataknese, and articulate their cultural identity.
