Abstract

The purpose of a movie is not always as an entertainment. On the other hand, movie can also be a movement to show an objection toward something happens in the world such as war. One of the movies attempting to show an objection toward war is Grave of Fireflies. Through the setting, this movie portrays the terrible situation of World War II in Kobe, Japan. In this thesis, the writer invites readers to examine and understand Grave of Fireflies deeper and better by using Formalistic Approach. There are two findings in the analysis. First, the writer finds that the war is cruel. By describing and explaining the setting of the movie, the writer proves that the war is terrible. Second, by analyzing the characters of the movie which portrayed by children, Seita and Setsuko as the main characters, the movie is able to show that children are the most vulnerable beings in time of war.
