Abstract

Doctor Strange is a unique superhero film in which the main character's development can be understood thoroughly as if watching a journey enveloping the birth of a hero. This study aims to find out how Campbell’s Monomyth theory can be applied to the Doctor Strange film. By watching the film more than once and separating the scenes into segments, the writer can analyze the part of the film and classify the stages of the Monomyth theory that are shown in the film. The result of those analyses is simplified into three main parts: Departure stage, Initiation stage, and return stage. In the departure stage, the main character must go on a journey to look for a cure following an accident that resulted in his incapabilities. In the Initiation stage, after the main character has learned the wisdom and knowledge to cure himself, he must be ready to shoulder the responsibilities of becoming a newborn hero, which will lead him to many struggles and obstacles with his life on the line. In the returning stage, the main character can become a normal citizen with a different identity as a hero after witnessing how important his responsibilities are to continue on this new path.
