Abstract

The main data of this research is The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831) novel authored by Victor Hugo. It is a novel that tells about the Gypsies who are also widely known as the Romani people. By making use of socio-historical criticism approach, it is found that the Gypsies, who are living in the medieval era is portrayed by Hugo as people who are characterized by their irregularity and illegality of existence. This research shows that the irregularity is shown in the novel by Gypsies who live their lives as nomads. The nomadic characteristics has influenced the Gypsies’: 1) customs and beliefs, 2) languages, 3) appearances, and 4) occupations. Meanwhile, this research also finds that the illegality of their lives are shown by their criminal acts. This is proven by the actions that they show through living their lives as: 1) beggars and vagabonds, 2) thieves, 3) witches, 4) sorcerers, 5) child kidnappers, and 6) child eaters. Nonetheless, as they depicted negative in many aspects, they are also clever ethnic groups which know their position making it into advantages to them.
