Abstract

This research focuses on the identity Jazz Ngisoringin performers posses in their musical career in Semarang city. The purposes of this research are to find out the reasons Jazz Ngisoringin community performers choose to be ‘Jazz Musicians’ and to find out the identity Jazz Ngisoringin community performers bear in their musical career. For these purposes, the writer interviewed 5 (five) informants who are the performers of Jazz Ngisoringin for better knowledge and understanding of the identity those musicians’ posses. The results of the the researchs shows that performers of Jazz Ngisoringin community have several reasons for choosing jazz. The reasons are wanting to learn jazz, and because of the ‘feeling’. The reasons the musicians choose jazz can not be separated from the identity they possess, which are self-identity that they personally possess through their musical career and group identity that Jazz Ngisoringin community possess through its sorroundings. These two identities offer their own meaning, and understanding. In the case of Jazz Ngisoringin, the meaning and understanding of the identities are Jazz Ngisoringin community performers posses 2 identities. Self-Identity and Group Identity. Self Identity that are mentioned are Self-Identity as the Self-Identification and Self- Identity as Psychological Belonging. Self-Identity as Self-Identification contains 2 parts, Music contribute to an identity (Its “feel” or affective quality) which means it gives Jazz Ngisoringin community performers flexibility, freedom and pride through their musical career and Music gives to an identity, especially a subaltern identity, positive valence, which means it gives Jazz Ngisoringin communnity performers curiosity, creativity, and as fundamental to their musical career. Self-Identity as Psychological Belonging in the case of Jazz Ngisoringin is that It makes a feeling of possesion and a feeling of satisfaction through playing music within the same style with the group. Group Identity that Jazz Ngisoringin possess is more concerning towards the influence that Jazz Ngisoringin gives to Semarang. The influences is that the board of Semarang creating event behalf of Jazz Ngisoringin community birthday.
