Abstract

Green mussels are one of the biota that is susceptible to microplastic contamination. Green mussels are categorized as filter feeders. Filter feeder can filter materials including sediment in the sea. Microplastic is a plastic piece smaller than 5 mm. Microplastics are formed by the degradation of larger plastic items into smaller fragment. Microplastic pollution has occurred in the world's oceans. This pollution is a threat to marine health and ecosystems. Microplastics contained in the waters not only take on the surface of the water, but they can accumulate in the waters and in the sediment. Microplastic has been detected into the food chain, because microplastic have been widely spread in the waters so that they contaminate various aquatic biota and including those consumed by humans and sold on the market. One of biota, that is susceptible to microplastics contaminant is green mussles.. In Semarang green mussels are abudant very much and can be easily found in traditional markets in Semarang. For this reason, this study was conducted to calculate and identify microplastics of green mussels sold at three tradisional markets in Semarang. This research was carried out in two stages, namely the preliminary test and the main research. Preliminary tests were carried out to optimize the time and temperature of the extraction method that in order to obtain microplastic particles and to ensure that microplastic particles didn’t undergoing change or during the extraction and isolation stages. The research method used included extraction of green mussels using 10% KOH solution and incubated for 96 hours at 40 ° C. The next process, the separation of plastic polymer using 4.4M NaI solution and filtered using 22μm filter paper. The last process, filter paper from the results of the separation of plastic polymers was observed under an Olympus BX-41 microscope. Particle Suspected Microplastics (PSM) found in green mussels with average was 11.12 ± 2.98 particles/organism. Microplastic forms found include films, fragments, spheres, and fibers. The most abundant a size of microplastics in green mussel samples from all markets was <20μm. This size is likely to undergo translocation in the human body and may affect human health
