Abstract

This study aims to investigate the correlation between body shame and the tendency of social appearance anxiety among early adulthood age of female college students in Soegijapranata Catholic University Semarang aged 20-22 years (N=109). The main hypothesis of the research is there is a positive correlation of body shame and the tendency of social appearance anxiety in early adulthood age of female college students. A total of 109 female collage students that met requirements became research participants and were willing to fill out the Tendency of Social Appearance Anxiety Scale and Body Shame Scale as data research collection tools. This study’s preliminary findings which were analyzed using Karl Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation acknowledge that there is a significantly positive relationship between body shame and the tendency of social appearance among early adulthood age of female college students with a relation coefficient rxy = 0,855 (p<0,05). Body shame has 73,2% of effective contribution coefficient to the tendency of social appearance anxiety. In general, this result attests that research’s main hypothesis is fully accepted which concludes that the higher level of body shame, the higher level of tendency of social appearance anxiety as a result, and vice versa.
