Abstract

A commonly cultural practice in all cultures, ritual communicates the value, ideas, beliefs embraced by a particular group of people. This study attempts to describe and understand the symbolic meanings of elements involved in a ritual, called Barikan kecil, of the people living in Karimunjawa Island, Central Java, Indonesia. In order to collect data on this ritual, the researcher interviewed the chairperson of Barikan kecil and Barikan besar, and some of the locals in the island. She was also engaged in the participant observation of the ritual at the time of its performance. The researcher found out that Barikan kecil is a ritual that is used to ask for forgiveness, prosperity, protection, and welfare. This ritual is mostly performed by women for practical reason and religious inclination. Barikan Kecil ritual is heavily influenced by Islam religion which can be seen from the language of their prayer. In conducting this ritual, participants prepare offerings that consist of yellow rice, mung beans, raw salt, egg, chili pepper, shrimp paste, and shallot. These offerings hold particular meanings for the locals. Barikan Kecil ritual is a tradition that still gives impact to the people in the Island of Karimunjawa.
