Abstract

Part of Me music video by Katy Perry shows the presence of women empowerment. Throughout the music video, there are some changes and drastic body transformations experienced by Katy Perry which represent body as a site of struggle.Women’s body is often regarded only as a maternal body or merely as a man’s pleasure. Katy Perry shows the strength of a woman by her activities in marines which promote the spirit of women empowerment. The theory used in this research is Susan Bordo’s theory from her book, Unbearable Weight. This book contains a collection of essays that discuss the representation of body. Susan Bordo emphasizes on how a body can be a medium of power where every woman has power to use her body according to what she desires. The results of this study show that there are four changes in her appearance. Katy Perry cuts her hair, tapes her upper body, removes all of her make-up, and appears more masculine with her outfit. The struggle of Katy Perry shows that women’s body is an arena where women can transform themselves from being powerless to powerful. Susan Bordo’s theory in Unbearable Weight is applied in Katy Perry’s protagonist character in the music video which shows that women’s body can be designated to train their bodies and become powerful.
