Abstract

Indonesia is a tropical country that has a lot of biodiversity, including many varieties of exotic tropical fruits. This biodiversity is a grace of God hence its sustainability should be kept and maintained. Maintaining the biodiversity is crucial since all living things are connected each others. University academic's society takes an important role in conducting the critical and creative thingking processes, as well as skills and strategies to make connections between the living things and environment in accordance with the God's will. Participation of academic's society is a real form of new evangelization that can be conducted by research and knowledge transfer. These activities are purposed to make a good connections among science, technology, environment and society. Research and knowledge transfer conducted by the Department of Food Technology, Soegijapranata Catholic University (SCU), Cental Java-Indonesia, is aimed to participate actively in reducing poverty and improving the welfare of society. One of the activities is purposed to improve the livelihoods of farm house holds, especially traditional fruit farmers in Central Java. Firstly, this article will discuss the potency of Indonesian tropical fruit in compete with imported fruit at this globalization era. Secondly, the roles of university in transferring research and knowledge were explored. Then, the methods to improve the quality and safety of fresh fruit and processed fuits were discussed. The discussion is emphasized on the research and transfer knowledge in improving the management of post harvest handling, improving the value added through processing of fruits and enhancing the synergy between traditional farmers and the fruit processing industry.
