Abstract

This thesis contains an analysis of the tragic hero elements in the movie entitled Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). The movie is set in Fleet Street, London in Victorian era and directed by Tim Burton. In this thesis the writer analyzed a tragic hero in the movie using Aristotle’s tragedy theory. The writer also analyzed the setting of the movie which is Victorian era. The aim of this research is to find out the main character can be concluded as tragic hero or not and also how is the movie portrayed the Victorian setting. The writer used qualitative research method to analyze it. By capturing the scenes of the movie, the writer interpreted and matched it with the theory. The final result of this thesis shows that there are six elements of tragic hero in a whole movie. The six elements are Nemesis, Hubris, Hamartia, Pripeteia, Anagnorisis, and Catharsis. These results are accordance with Aristotle’s tragedy theory. For the Victorian era, the characteristic of environment, architecture, and fashion also matches with the film.
