Abstract

Gender stereotypes are simplified ideas and general beliefs about how people should act based on their gender. These stereotypes often support traditional views, like expecting men to be strong and dominant and women to be nurturing and passive. Understanding and challenging gender stereotypes are important for promoting gender equality and allowing people to express themselves freely without being limited by outdated societal expectations. This research deals with gender stereotypes displayed by one character, Jin Ho-gyeong in the Korean drama, Alchemy of Souls (Park JoonHwa, 2022). Gender stereotypes are related to four forms, namely personality traits, domestic behavior, occupations, and physical appearance. This research reveals that Jin Ho-gyeong experiences three out of these four types of gender stereotypes, those are, gender stereotypes related to 1) personality traits such as being a sensitive person, 2) domestic behavior such as taking care of the children, and 3) physical appearance such as wearing Korean clothes. In terms of occupations, Jin Ho-gyeong shows that women can successfully lead a place or group, thus, challenging the stereotype that women are incapable of leadership.
