Abstract

Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer is a novel about a woman of Dutch and Javanese descent, Annelies Mellema, who faces both external and internal conflicts in her life as a result of her background as a mixed of Javanese and Europeans. This thesis aims to determine the self-conflict experienced by Annelies Mellema and the effects on her. This research is a qualitative research using the intrinsic element analysis, especially on the internal conflict, for example, conflict. The collected data shows that Annelies experienced several conflicts but all her efforts are futile. The conflict faces by Annelies is her relationship with Minke is disapproved by her father and her brother, she is abused by Robert Mellema, and she must go to Amsterdam because her father died. This conflict caused self-conflict in Annelies, she is crying, sick, and passive because she cannot do anything.
