Abstract

Two Kinds is a short story written by Amy Tan. This short story portrays the life of a girl named Jing Mei who is a second-generation Chinese immigrant that lives in America. Therefore, Jing Mei has two cultural backgrounds, the American culture she got directly from the host society and the Chinese culture she got from the family. Consequently, Jing Mei feels frustrated growing up in Chinese and American cultures that have huge cultural differences. The objective of the study is to find out Jing Mei’s acculturation strategy by examining her cultural orientation. In studying these problems, the writer uses two theories; ethnic indicators by Kennedy and Hall (2006) and acculturation strategy theory by Berry (2006). The four categories that define Jing Mei’s acculturation strategy are separation, integration, marginalized, or assimilation. The result of this study shows that Jing Mei identifies her cultural orientation to American culture by overlooking her culture of origin, Chinese culture. Thus, assimilation is Jing Mei’s category of acculturation strategy.
