Abstract

This study aims to find out young people’s perceptions of modifying cars and the reasons that make them modify their cars. This is a quantitative study which use closed ended questionnaire to find the answers to the research questions. The participants are those who have their cars modified. They are around seventeen to twenty-four. The questionnaire consists of two parts: the first is on their perception on modifying cars and the second is on their reasons to modify their cars. Based on the analysis, it was found out that the participants have positive attitude about modifying cars as a positive activity. Meanwhile, the reasons for them to modify their cars is for the appearance not for the performance. Their main reasons to modify their cars is to be part of the group of young people who modify their cars as they feel that modifying cars make them look masculine so that they gain recognition in their groups. This is the reflection of young people’s personalities who think that becoming part of an important group is essential. In addition, safety is not their reasons to modify their cars as item 9 and 10 get the lowest mean. Item 9 and ten is about safety. The reason to modify is not to make car safer. This means that when they modify their cars, they do not have any purpose to make their cars safer.
