Abstract

Nowadays, more cases of male victims of sexual violence are disclosed, but the hegemonic masculinity in society still hinders the facts about male victims of sexual violence. This thesis used the Korean criminal law miniseries Witch at Court (2017) as the object of discussion. This study aims to show how male victims of rape by female perpetrators are discriminated against in several aspects due to hegemonic masculinity and false beliefs about male rape. A theory by Kimberlee Crenshaw (1991) was applied to reveal the intersectional discrimination based on sexual orientation, class, and gender experienced by male victims of rape by female perpetrators. In addition to the previous theory, the writer also uses the summary of male rape false beliefs by Turchik and Edwards (2012). Therefore, the readers could see how harmful the false beliefs toward a male rape victim as false beliefs are represented in the Korean miniseries Witch at Court. The results of the study show that Woo Sung Nam experienced intersectional discrimination because he is a homosexual, a poor student and teaching assistant, and a man. Woo Sung Nam also fell victim to the false belief that men cannot be raped; only homosexuals can rape another homosexual, and male rape only happens in prison
