Abstract

This research is Discourse Analysis which aims to know a relation between the language and the context it is used. This research uses National Exam news on BBC Indonesia website as the data source. The Discourse Analysis of National Exam news uses Social Semiotics theory by M.A.K Halliday and Exclusion and Inclusion theory by Theo van Leeuwen with qualitative as the method of analysis. Social Semiotics aims to know some aspects of news such as Field of Discourse, Tenor of Discourse, and Mode of Discourse. Exclusion and Inclusion aim to know how some actors or occurrences are excluded or included in the context. The results according to the Social Semiotics theory show an expectation towards a new standard that can be used as an alternative of National Exam grades to be a new student admission requirement. Social Semiotics also presents eight actors and three figures of speech on National Exam news. Based on the Exclusion theory, the result shows Passivation and Nominalization in some sentences, and Inclusion theory shows Differentiation - Indefferntiation, Objectivity - Abstraction, Determination - Indetermination, and Assimilation - Individualization on National Exam news.
