Abstract

Food taboo on some kinds of food occurs in several areas in Indonesia. The researcher is interested in this phenomenon because he wants to know more about how influential food taboo is in people‟s lives. In this study the researcher examined food taboo for pregnant women in Kaliwungu Semarang district. This study used qualitative research type. Some informants living in Kaliwungu said “food taboo which related to pregnant women has been a long live tradition among them”. However, the informants do not really know why food taboo exists. There are twelve foods taboo in this research. They are twelve foods taboo: pineapple,durian, sea fish, ice, jackfruit, longan, sugarcane, sugar, cat fish, egg, eggplant, twins banana. In this research not all informants believe in foods taboo. In fact they give different opinions. Some informants believe in the consequences faced by the pregnant women who break the taboo, such as, miscarriage, maternal bleeding, or having “hot” sensation in their belly. Some other informants think that this practice is done only to respect the elders who still believe on the negative impacts of consuming the food taboo for pregnant women.
