Abstract

The Old Man and The Sea is one of the best novel is written by Ernest Hemingway. Full of tragedy of someone who never surrender to his life makes this novel more interesting than any novel. Served by simple words makes the readers understand the story easily. The story of this novel is opened by the main character, Santiago el Champeon. He is an old man who fishes alone in the Gulf Stream. He is ever known as the champion because he can defeat the winner of arm games in his country and he also can catch three fish per day during eighty-five days. After that, during eighty-four days he is fishing without any fish with a boy named Manolin. This situation makes him sad and he is determined to prove his heroic side in fishing. Finally, he decided to go alone in fishing. This thesis, entitled ”The Study of Heroism, Narcissism and Altruism in Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea” uses psychological approach to analyze Santiago as the main character in this novel. Psychological approach is the approach of analysing the personality and the character of someone. In this thesis the writer will analyze how heroism, narcissism and altruism can occur in this novel. The result of this analysis shows that none of person is perfect. Absolutely, in the character of someone there are two sides: good characters and bad characters.
