Abstract

The use of Indonesian language in Semarang is influenced by the existence of Javanese as vernacular. The influence also happens in the language used by Semarang Chinese descendants, nevertheless, the language used by Semarang Chinese descendants has unique characteristics. From that reason, the writer is interested in observing what kind of word formation is commonly used in the conversations of Semarang Chinese descendants and how the process of word formation takes place. The data of this study was taken from some conversations among some Semarang Chinese descendants that speak the language that is the combination between Indonesian and Javanese, and some words that are uncommonly used both in Indonesian and Javanese. The conversations were recorded then they were transcribed. Later the data were classified into some categories and were analysed based on the theory of word formation process. The results show that in daily informal conversations, Semarang Chinese descendants use words that are the combination of Indonesian roots combined with Javanese suffixes and Indonesian roots combined with Javanese roots. Besides, Semarang Chinese descendants’ words also undergo the deletion processes in order to make a spoken discourse simple and efficient. The deletion happens both in the roots and in the prefixes. Moreover, they also use a da preposition, as general locative preposition and temporal preposition, which is not used both in Indonesian and Javanese language.
