Abstract
This thesis analyzes the transformation that happened in the British society in the era of industrial revolution reflected in Hard Times, a novel written by Charles Dickens. The technology advances in the industrial society in the 19th century and the values at that time make the society lose their simple and innocent lives, and entered the life that is full of struggle to get a good living. The sociological approach and historical approach were applied to analyze the novel. Historical approach is used to analyze the existence of the industrial revolution in the 19th century and the sociological approach is used to analyze the transformation in the society as the effect of the industrial revolution in. The society transformation in England shown in Hard Times includes the changes in politics, economy, technology, and the family values. It also includes the struggle to get a better position in the society (from middle class to upper class), the relationship between the owner and the workers which becomes worse, and the dependency of the workers on their owner. Those transformations are the result of the industrial revolution which obliges people to work harder to get a good lives.
