Abstract

Borderline personality disorder is characterized by instability in many life domains such as interpersonal relationships, behavior, cognition, and emotions. One of the symptoms often found in those with borderline personality is emotional dysregulation. The purpose of this research is to find out how dialectical behavior therapy effects on reducing emotional dysregulation in subject with borderline personality disorder. The research design uses a single-case which is non-experimental or case study. Interviews, observation, psychological tests, and the personality scale are used to collect the data. Measurements were made quantitatively with The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale– DERS and qualitatively with interviews and observations. Subject in this research is an 19-year-old adult woman who met the criteria for borderline personality disorder. The intervention consisted of 9 sessions; orientation, behavior analysis, mindfulness skills, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, effective interpersonal and termination. The results show that there was a decrease in the DERS score from 133 to 108. Subject become able to accept and understand the emotions, doesn’t get carried away by her negative emotions, accept conditions that can’t be changed, and find concrete ways to get through a hard times. These results indicate that DBT can reduce symptoms of emotional dysregulation in subject.
