Abstract

This is a study about the refusal strategics used by Javanese and Chinese students in Faculty of Letters Socgijaprunata Catholic University. Semarang. It was analyzed based on Garcius refusal strategics ( 1992) supported by Takahashi, Beebe and Uliss-Weltz refusal strategics ( 1990). It concerned the refusal strategics of Javanese and Chinese students in Faculty or Letters Socgijupranata Catholic University. The data were taken from 50 respondents: 25 Javanese students and 25 Chinese students. The researcher found that hotli-of" Javanese and Chinese respondents pre for to use regret/sorrow stratcg o refuse rCCJ.,UCS s: I'hc writer also found that Javanese respondents prefer to using regret/sorrow strut gy to refuse invitation and most Chinese 'respondents; use reason/explanation to refuse invitation. For refusal in suggestion, the data shows that most Javanese respondents prefer to using regret/sorr w to refuse su •gcstion am must Chinese use direct refusal to refuse suggesti .. respondents prefer to pn.
