Abstract
Interference is seen more as a process when someone is learning a second language. This process naturally happens before the language learner successfully achieves the target language proficiency. Interference can be divided into four categories which are overgeneralization, simplification, hypercorrection, and avoidation. However, in this research, the writer who focused on English written performance only highlights the overgeneralization and simplification. Based on the data that have been obtained, it is found that the participants of her study did both simplification and overgeneralization although simplification (68%) is superior to the overgeneralization (32%). There are some reasons underlying this fact which are mostly due to different tenses between the LJ and L2. However, as interference is a process rather than a final product of learning language, it is hoped that it is not seen as a permanent incorrectness.
