Abstract
Beloved is an American novel which tells about an ex-slave’s life named Sethe who has traumatic slavery experiences. Sethe is a victim of slavery, but her behavior also causes many other victims; they are her children (Howard and Buglar who ran away because frightened of the baby ghost, Beloved who becomes victim of her own mother’s killing, and Denver who is trapped in her loneliness) and Paul D who loves Sethe but could not quickly reach her because Sethe is not confident with her own future. A person who has trauma in her life has a potential to being psychologically-ill besides suffering physical abuse. Through the psychological theories formulated by Kretschmer and Hurlock, it is found that Sethe’s behavior after the slavery experience is considered abnormal and thus, judges her to be mentally ill.
