Abstract

Recently service-learning has been considered as an attractive learning method and applied across educational levels and academic disciplines. Service-learning is an innovation in education originated from the US. After more than two decades, a growing interest on service-learning has also been shown by universities in other parts of the world. The passion which drove service-learning’s growth in the early years probably due to the appeal of service-learning which serves both idealistic and practical goals. Service-Learning is rooted in the experiential learning theory and great ideas of John Dewey which stressed the significance of the ‘‘intimate and necessary relation between the processes of actual experience and education’’. In this framework, the most powerful learning occurs when genuine and noteworthy problems are examined, reflected, and acted upon in their rich contextual complexity. This paper deals with two fundamental questions about service-learning, i.e. what is it and why is it important.
