Abstract
Words that people used to show their powerful emotions are called swear words. The activity in saying some swear words is called swearing phenomenon. People did not realize that swearing has influenced on their lives over the time. Swear words are included as something ordinary which people usually found in society. However, information about the clear explanation of them have been lacking. This research describes how the writer categorized swear words based on their kinds and characteristics. The data for this study were taken from the movie American Pie Naked Mile. To collect the data, the writer used audio files and visuals. The method of data analysis used in this study is the qualitative method using a clear description from more than one sources. The findings showed that the kinds of swear words mostly used in the movie are body function and religious terms. Moreover, the characteristics of swear words mostly found are strong swear words in insult.
