Abstract

This research aims to find out whether the main character of the film The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen, is following the American, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s philosophy of self-reliance or not. Using an American Studies approach, the condition of the American capitalist society, which becomes the setting of the film and the historical background of how Americans are characterized by their spirit of individualism becomes the supporting points for Katniss Everdeen in having Emerson’s self-reliance. Through a qualitative analysis, it is found that Kaniss Everdeen experiences the characteristics of Emerson’s self-reliance, which they are: (1) by following her individual will instead of conforming to social expectations, she can (2) develop her own culture of individual needs rather than on society needs. Then, in order that she can continue to be true to her own will, she has to 3) uphold her own honesty in relationship with others, by 4) following her own voice rather than to an intermediate.
