Abstract

Chatting is a kind of long distance communication. This is a kind of direct written communication. Sometimes, the structure of chatting can make people confused and they may not understand the purpose of chatting. These aims of this study are to find some elements in the structure of chatting and to know the purpose of making conversation through chatting. The writer used observation to collect data. The observation is done by entering the chatting room, doing chatting, collecting the data, recording the conversation that can be automatically saved in computer, analyzing, then counting the frequency of the elements to know what element is most widely used. The result of this study shows that there are five elements of chatting that are Thread, Chain, Fork, Tail, and Isolated. Besides that, it is also found that there are many kinds of purposes of chatting. They are learning a foreign language, doing cybersex, doing business, flirting, sharing common interest, and just for chatting.
