Abstract

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of Samuel Langhorne Clemens’ novel. This is his finest novel. The novel was firstly published in 1884 in the United States of America. The story of the novel itself tells about a young boy named Huck. He is taught many of life’s lessons that will help him deal with events that occur later in his life. Huck fakes his death in order to run away from his alcoholic father and his caretaker, Mrs. Watson and also to escape from being civilized. While floating down the Mississippi River, he meets Jim, the runaway slave who is owned by Mrs. Watson because he wants to be a free man. This novel is regarded as one of Samuel Langhorne Clemens’ masterpieces. In the novel, Samuel Langhorne Clemens reveals his life experiences during his boyhood life. By using the traditional approach which allows an analysis of the character and setting, the biographical and sociological approaches are used. This thesis proves that the novel is a potrait of the biography of the writer, Samuel Langhorne Clemens and also the description of the 1850s American society.
