Abstract

This study aims to explore the utilization of code-switching among English instructors at Eduhouse, focusing on its types, rationales, and frequency. Employing a qualitative methodology, data were acquired through direct classroom observations and interviews. Poplack's 1980 framework was applied to categorize code-switching types, while triangulation techniques were employed to enhance data reliability and validity. The results reveal that teachers utilize all three forms of code-switching—tag, inter- sentential, and intra-sentential—during English instruction, with intra-sentential switching being the most prevalent and tag-switching the least frequent. The writer also found the teacher’s reason on using the code-switching, which are Indonesia Language as teachers' mother tongue, familiarity and comfort with English, adapting to workplace demands and expectations, ensuring comprehensive student understanding, and meeting specific language subject requirements. This study also found the instances where code-switching is employed in the classroom, are expressing emotions, addressing student behavior, recalling forgotten words, providing advice, and testing student understanding.
