Abstract

As a part of five approaches, psychological approach is one of essential elements that give a very great influence in a literary world. It is very helpful to bring a deeper meaning for the writer to put this approach in novels, poems, drama, and also short story. Doris Lessing tries to combine psychological approach with the social condition of patriarchal system that Susan, as the character has. She describes the character side which encountering personality problem in her marriage life. To Room Nineteen is a short story about a middleclass English woman that has to be labeled as a mad woman, because she lived under domination of man or patriarchal world. By her position as a wife, who always stays at home and takes all responsibilities of the household activities, Susan has to take the fact that she got a personality or mental problem. This story is trying to show that woman’s position under man is still exist.
