Abstract

Sangjit or seserahan is a tradition that has been carried out for generations. People who are of Chinese descent who live in Semarang still maintain this tradition. The purpose of this research is to explain the stages of Sangjit and all the elements in their meanings. In doing this study, the writer participated in aSangjit to observe the tradition, did some interviews with several people who understood Sangjit, and documented in the form of photographs. The research found that the following are the stages carried out in Sangjit tradition: asking for consent from the woman's family, wedding proposal (Tingjing), and the Sangjit itself. During Sangjit, there are food and goods presented by the future groom to the future bride. All the food and goods are carried in trays by supposedly unmarried bearers. The number of trays presented must be even, while the goods and food carried do not have to be in even number. This study found that goods and foods of Chinese wedding gifts chosen to be presented in Sangjit consist of angpao, party money, jewelry, clothes, makeup, sweet snacks, fruits, canned food, two pairs of red candles, and two bottles of red wine. The goods and food are believed to bring well-being for the household of the groom and the bride.
