Abstract

Emoticons are extensively used among computer-mediated communication users. However, there is still lack of consensus among users on emoticons functions perform in messages. In this study, the writer investigated the most used emoticons and the functions that they perform in the data that were collected by LINE messengers. For this purpose, she applied both pragmatics theories (speech acts) and multimodal approach. The results showed that LINE users in the data commonly used a “sad face” emoticon in their messages. The results of this study also showed that the speaker used emoticons to retrieve specific emotional context. It carried sentiment and emotion information. Besides, from the data, the writer found that emoticons can also perform a variety of functions such as to express the speaker’s mood (in symmetrical interaction), to indicate politeness and intimacy boosters (in enhancing interactions), and also to portray ironic contribution and humor (in contradictory interaction).
