Abstract

This research focuses on Amy Winehouse‟s song lyrics in her album Back to Black. The research aims to find out Amy Winehouse‟s depressions presented in her song lyrics. The writer has chosen four songs to analyze Rehab, Back to Black, Love is a Losing Game, and You Know that I am no good. The method of analysis was using a biographical approach and Barthes' semiotic approach. The results of the study are: the first song tells about Amy‟s personal experience of depression when her boyfriend left her for his former girlfriend, the second song tells about Amy‟s depression resulted in her refusal to attend alcohol rehabilitation, the third song tells about Amy‟s depression led to pessimism about herself thinking that she is not a good girl and the fourth tells about Amy wants to be a real friends and hang out with her ex boy without any disturbance. While Amy Winehouse‟s biography written by Newkey-burden helps to understand the stories behind the song lyrics, Barthes‟s semiotics helps to understand the choice of words such as “dead, last, black, high, depressed, alone, and cry” showing how depressed Amy Winehouse was. The writer concludes that son can be use to express depression. While Amy Winehouse uses negative connotation in her lyrics to express her depression.
