Abstract

The research focuses on Teochew language maintenance as a part of Sociolinguistic topic of interest. The objective of the study is to analyze the students’ and their parents’ efforts to maintain their Teochew heritage language. There were 40 participants consisting of 20 parents and 20 students in this study. Close ended questionnaires were used to collect the data. The result shows that the students and their parents maintained their Teochew heritage language by communicating in Chinese Teochew with their parents, spouse, sisters or brothers, parents who encouraged children to attend Chinese Teochew's speech contest, join the Chinese Teochew writing contest, send their children to Chinese Teochew courses, allow their children to attend homestay programs to enhance their Chinese Teochew ability, send the children to schools that have Teochew Chinese lessons, and visit China's Teochew cultural festivals such as Pasar Semawis (Semawis Exhibition) to maintain the Teochew heritage language.
