Abstract
The word “folklore“ is closely related to this living world. It can be stories, whether folktales, legends, myths, or beliefs, traditions, and customs, either it is traditional or modern. This study focuses on one kind of folkloric expressions, namely, ritual. It is a common activity in any culture which is fulfilled with meaningful goals and identity expression of a particular community. This research deals with the death ritual in Confucianism or Kong Hu Chu religion. This research has three goals. The first goal is to describe the five rituals performed by the Confucians. The rituals cover the time when the coffin is brought to the funeral home and the time when the deceased is in cemetery or burnt in crematorium. Four rituals: Pai Kui, Jieb Bok, Moy Song, and Jiep Gong are performed in the funeral home, while Sang Cong in crematorium place or cemetery. The second goal is to reveal why the Confucians still run the rituals. Basically Confucianism teachings emphasize on the respect for the ancestors, filial piety to the parents, and maintenance of good relationship among human beings. Therefore, Confucians attempt to honor their ancestors and respect their fellow humans. As some informants point out, performing these rituals is also the Confucians’ effort to preserve their tradition. The last goal is to describe the superstitious meanings of the objects used in each ritual. Sio Gim and paper xi house miniature are some of ritual objects that have superstitious meanings. They are burnt as a symbol of supplies stock for the deceased in his new realm. There are also offerings served on the table. A few of them are considered having superstitious meaning as well.
