Abstract

This thesis contains an error analysis on narrative writings of Paragraph and Expository Writing of the second semester (1st year) students. The analysis is aimed at finding out the grammatical errors made by students in writing narrative texts including their beliefs about how they think of their understanding of grammar elements which are included in their writing. The writer used mixed methods both qualitative and quantitative. From the narrative writings made by the students, the writer analyzed it to find the errors. The errors then are categorized into 4 (four) categories according to Corder‟s theory of error classification (1981). These classifications are also classified into word classes. The questionnaires on the students‟s beliefs on their understanding of the grammar are given to the students. From the analysis, it was found that the students made some errors in their narrative writings, but the result of the questionnaire shows that they believe that they understand the uses and functions of grammar.
