Abstract

Talkshows are the kinds of TV shows which present the MC and the guest speakers. One of the most popular talkshows in Indonesia is Mata Najwa. Many people like this show because of the MC, the guests, and the discussion. Najwa Shihab, the MC can ask sharp and clever questions to her guests which make the show interest ing to be watched. The writer was interested to use Gricean‟s Maxim theory to analyze the conversation happened in the shows. As a representation, the writer chose two episodes which were Dari Jogja Untuk Bangsa (From Jogja for the Country) and Elit Layar Kaca (The Glass Screen Elite). The talkshows were recorded and all the conversations were analysed. The writer found that there were four kinds of Flouting of the Maxims that happened for various reasons. The four floutings were the flouting of maxim of quality, the flouting of maxim of quantity, the flouting of maxim of relation, and the flouting of maxim of manner. The flouting was important because it would make the conversation run interestingly.
