Abstract
Code-mixing is often used by bilingual speakers in daily communication. Today, it is also common in television series, especially those watched by Generation Z. This study aims to identify the types of code-mixing and explain the purposes of code-mixing used by the characters in Asmara Gen Z. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from 255 utterances containing code-mixing in Episodes 75, 99, 103, 327, and 331 of Asmara Gen Z. The data were collected by watching the episodes, identifying the utterances, transcribing the dialogues, and classifying them based on the theories used in this study. The study used the theory proposed by Muysken (2000) to identify the types of code-mixing, while that of Hoffmann (1991), supported by Gumperz (1982), was used to explain the purposes of code-mixing.The findings showed three types of code-mixing: insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Insertion is the most common type with 150 utterances (59%), followed by alternation with 99 utterances (39%) and congruent lexicalization with 6 utterances (2%). This study also found seven purposes of code-mixing: expressing emotions, emphasizing meaning, creating intimacy or solidarity, referring to modern or pop-culture concepts, efficiency and lexical need, persuasion, and humor and sarcasm. Among these purposes, persuasion is the most common, while humor and sarcasm are the least common. Overall, the findings show that code-mixing is a common part of the way Generation Z communicates in Asmara Gen Z and is used for different purposes in different conversations.
