Abstract

he Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is a film featuring William Kamkwamba as the main character and the one who becomes the subject of analysis in this study . This thesis attempts to investigate the indirect characterization of William in the movie. This qualitive research is carried out by watching the movie thoroughly several times and identifying and taking notes of the character presentations of William in five elements of indirect characterization indicators covering the character’s look or appearance, his actions, his environment and background, the dialogues, and how other supporting characters perceive Williams. The findings are that William is a determined and resilient young boy as portrayed in the dialogues and his actions. His environment and background shapes him to develop a strong will to build a windmill, which saves his family and the villages from drought and famine. The supporting characters, his family members, and his close friends are very supportive to encourage him to achieve her dreams. Other indirect characterization is that William is poor and has not had much in his life. His appearance and his surrounding, including home shows his poor life condition. Some parts of dialogues also signify the financial issues faced by his family. William’s actions, for examples, eating once a day describes about poverty. The undesirable environment like flood and drought, the absence of running water, poor infrastructure speaks volume about his family’s and the villagers’ conditions. The windmill, built as a fruit of William’s strong determination, innovation, and intelligence, sparks a sense of optimism for better life for William’s family and the people in his village.
