Abstract
Minari (2020) is a film that tells the story of a family who comes from South Korea to the United States of America. Arkansas is the state that is selected by Jacob Yi, the head of the family, for his family to live, because the place is considered as spacious and good for farming. Jacob, especially in farming, has experienced new cultures and challenges since moving to Arkansas. His response to the new culture and environment shows that he is trying to adjust to the new culture and environment. For this endeavor, Jacob’s formerly learned culture seems to be influential. The purpose of this study is to find out the ways that Jacob Yi makes adjustments to the new culture in his farming work and to demonstrate how his formerly learned culture influences his cultural adjustment and culture shock process. The writer uses Paul Pedersen’s theory (1995) about the five stages of culture shock to examine Jacob Yi’s cultural adjustments. The result of this study shows that Jacob experiences all five stages of culture shock and everything that Jacob does to adjust to new cultures in each stage is influenced by his formerly learned culture. The influence of his formerly learned culture is high in the first three stages—honeymoon stage, disintegration stage, and reintegration stage, then it lowers down on the last two stages—autonomy stage and interdependence stage.
