Abstract

This study aims to analyze high school students’ perceptions of the importance of English formal learning at university. Through this research, the researcher explored the views of twelfth graders in a private high school in Semarang regarding the relevance and usefulness of learning English in their further education in university. In this study, 104 students agreed to participate. The method used in this study was quantitative research with a closed-ended questionnaire to gather data on students' perceptions. The results of the data analysis show that students have positive perceptions, shown by the average mean of 3,26 which indicates positive perspectives. Students also perceive communicative competence elements such as linguistics, discourse, interactional, and formulaic competencies are important.. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis persepsi siswa sekolah menengah atas tentang pentingnya belajar bahasa Inggris secara formal di universitas. Melalui penelitian ini, peneliti mengeksplorasi pandangan siswa tingkat akhir di sebuah sekolah menengah atas swasta di Semarang mengenai relevansi dan kegunaan belajar bahasa Inggris dalam pendidikan lanjutan mereka di universitas. Penelitian ini melibatkan 104 siswa sebagai responden. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif dengan kuesioner bersifat tertutup untuk mengumpulkan data mengenai persepsi siswa. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa siswa memiliki persepsi yang positif, yang ditunjukkan dengan nilai rata-rata sebesar 3,26 yang menunjukkan perspektif positif. Siswa juga menganggap elemen kompetensi komunikatif seperti linguistik, wacana, interaksional, dan kompetensi formula penting.
